Thiess has reached a major equipment milestone with the delivery of the 50th-ever Liebherr R 9600 mining excavator, now operating at Mount Pleasant. What makes this machine stand out is its custom-built bucket featuring Talk2MeBro branding, a mental health initiative aimed at sparking awareness and conversations across the industry.

Lendlease, working with the City of Melbourne and Scape Australia, has gained final heritage approval for Gurrowa Place, one of the city’s most significant upcoming urban regeneration projects. Set at the southern end of the historic Queen Victoria Market, the precinct will deliver thousands of new homes while preserving and celebrating the site’s cultural heritage.

👀 Three Headlines to Watch

🥇 Olympic Infrastructure Deal Finalised

The Federal and Queensland governments have signed a $7.1 billion agreement for 2032 Brisbane Olympic venues. The plan drops the $2.5 billion Brisbane Arena in favour of a new 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park. Federal funding: $3.43 billion. Queensland: $3.67 billion plus all cost overruns. Conditions include environmental sustainability, milestone-based funding, and joint approval on naming. Construction is slated to start in 2026. Read more in The Australian.

Why it matters: Certainty on funding and delivery structure allows contractors to start aligning resources. The conditional model means progress depends on hitting environmental and milestone benchmarks.

🛠️ Construction Skills Queensland Injects $8 Million to Solve Workforce Shortage

CSQ has committed a record $8 million in response to its Horizon 2032 report, which projects construction activity to grow from $53 billion in 2024-25 to $77 billion by 2026-27. That growth could create a 50,000-worker shortfall. The funding will expand skills training, attract career changers, and improve jobsite safety. Full story via Courier Mail.

Why it matters: Labour capacity is the bottleneck. This funding directly targets training and recruitment pathways that contractors will rely on to deliver upcoming projects.

🧊 The Cube on Domain: $15 Million Commercial Development in Townsville

Construction has begun on The Cube on Domain, a three-building, architect-designed project combining retail, office, and commercial space with 65-car parking. Confirmed tenants include Richo’s Coffee drive-thru, RSX Global tech services, a T-shirt printer, and an environmental consultancy. Completion is targeted for May 2026. More from Courier Mail.

Why it matters: A sign of regional commercial expansion and potential subcontracting opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
