🌱 Boundary Creek Project Update – Ward Civil and Environmental Engineering
Ward Civil and Environmental Engineering has marked a key milestone at the Boundary Creek site, handing over the first expanded module of works to BMD for the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. The works included excavation and construction of large temporary sediment basins, diversion drains, rock chutes, and erosion controls to manage challenging water flows and ensure environmental compliance.
Over the past eight months, the Ward team has delivered these works while maintaining safety and quality standards. They collaborated closely with WMD Farms to integrate measures such as hydroseeding, jute matting, and planting more than 12,000 native trees and shrubs to reduce environmental impacts.
Ward Civil thanked its teams, subcontractors, and BMD for a collaborative approach that kept the project on track despite weather and environmental challenges.

Australia’s data centre boom under scrutiny over water usage
NSW has approved about 10 large data centre projects worth $6.6 billion since 2021. Their combined water demand could reach 9.6 gigalitres per year, equal to around 2% of Sydney’s maximum supply. Many approvals lack firm commitments to water-saving technology, raising concern among local councils.
Why it matters: Data centre growth creates civil construction demand, but also puts new pressure on utilities. Contractors and designers must prepare for stricter regulation and incorporate water-efficient solutions. The issue also highlights the increasing role of climate resilience in project delivery.
