Project Ceres taking shape in Karratha

✈️ Clough progresses on Project Ceres

The Saipem Clough Joint Venture has officially passed the halfway milestone on Perdaman’s Project Ceres, a major urea plant development in Western Australia. Once complete, the plant will produce 2 million tonnes of urea fertiliser annually, strengthening local supply and export opportunities. The project is expected to generate around 2,000 jobs during construction, while also supporting the local community through training, skills development, and business opportunities. The latest update shows continued momentum on site as teams prepare for upcoming module deliveries.

🏅 McConnell Dowell recognised at Australian Construction Achievement Awards

McConnell Dowell was named a finalist at the 2024 Australian Construction Achievement Awards (ACAA), which celebrate excellence in project delivery and industry leadership. The awards highlight major infrastructure projects that drive innovation and collaboration across Australia.

🎗️ Symal Group marks 10 years supporting Fight Cancer Foundation

Symal Group and its businesses, Unyte, Wamarra, Sycle, Searo, and Ascot Bin Hire are joining forces to raise $200,000 for the Fight Cancer Foundation through Footy Colours Day. Over the past decade, the group has raised more than $685,000 to support kids and families affected by cancer.

🏟️ MG Civil awarded Water Lane Reserve Project

MG Civil Australia has been awarded the Water Lane Reserve Project, a community-focused development designed to deliver two oval-shaped sports fields for athletics and AFL. The project will also include an amenities building, accessible toilets and changerooms, a canteen, playground, basketball key, 200-space car park, sports lighting, irrigation and drainage systems, and extensive landscaping. The facility aims to provide long-term benefits for local sport and recreation.

🏥 John Holland reaches milestone at New Toowoomba Hospital

The John Holland team has marked a key milestone on the New Toowoomba Hospital project with the installation of four tower cranes on site. The development, delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government and Darling Downs Health, is set to transform healthcare access in the region. The state-of-the-art facility is being designed with patients, staff, and the community at its core, aiming to improve health outcomes for generations to come.

👀 Three Headlines to Watch

💰 Cost blowout revealed on Brisbane CBD tunnel

The Adelaide Street tunnel, part of the $3.6 billion Brisbane Metro project, has blown past its original $558 million estimate. Opening is set for 29 September 2025, with a public preview on 24 September. The tunnel is designed to remove 1,400 buses per weekday from CBD streets and includes new bus stops and electric vehicle charging.

Why it matters: Rising costs highlight risk factors in major transport builds. Contractors must factor in escalation in materials, energy, and labour, with flow-on effects to procurement and schedules.

🏗️ University of Melbourne delays Fishermans Bend campus

The University of Melbourne has paused its Fishermans Bend campus development after posting a $99 million deficit. The first stage was due to open next year, and the delay affects partnerships with industry players such as BAE Systems.

Why it matters: The pause shifts timelines for precinct infrastructure, utilities, and transport upgrades. Contractors should prepare for reprioritisation or renegotiation of scope.

🚂 Inland Rail route through Wagga Wagga under scrutiny

The Inland Rail project faces backlash in Wagga Wagga, where the current route would close Edmondson Street bridge—the main access to a new $282 million hospital. Ambulance access would be rerouted, sparking safety concerns. The federal government has allocated $30 million to explore alternative routes.

Why it matters: Potential redesigns could increase costs and delay delivery. Contractors may face community consultation requirements, traffic management challenges, and added scope.
